Austin Medford, 23, from Riverdale, California, was detained on Wednesday in Fresno by U.S. marshals from the Eastern District of California branch.

Medford faces initial charges of kidnapping, car-jacking and robbery over an incident in September. He could also face charges of escape from custody in New Mexico.

In November, Medford fled the Chaves County Detention Center in Roswell, New Mexico, on foot after changing from his blue scrubs into a red skirt and a dark top, while carrying a pink purse and wearing a scarf on his head.

His escape was captured by a security camera and he has been wanted by New Mexico police since November 19.

In a statement posted on Facebook, the Roswell Police Department said: “Austin Cyrus Medford has attempted to alter his appearance by shaving and cutting his hair.

“Medford has been observed on camera footage wearing girls clothing. He may be attempting to meet up with his wife/girlfriend and leave New Mexico.”

Police reportedly received information this week from someone who claimed to have seen Medford walking west on the New Mexico Military Institute golf course in Roswell.

The Fresno County Sheriff’s Office, Roswell Police, U.S Marshals in New Mexico, as well as the Chaves County Metro Narcotic Task Force, worked together to track down and arrest Medford.

Fresno County authorities said Medford’s brother, Aaron, would also be transported from custody in New Mexico to the Fresno County Jail. Aaron Medford will face similar charges from the car-jacking and kidnapping in Fresno.

Last year, a suspect who managed to escape after being detained at a New Jersey airport was arrested again after climbing into a bathroom ceiling.

The man was stopped by Customs and Border Protection officers as he attempted to flee the country from Newark airport while awaiting trial in January 2020, according to The New York Post and WABC.

After the U.S. citizen was taken to Terminal C for processing, he asked the officers if he could use the restroom. Once in the bathroom, the suspect allegedly tried to escape by climbing into the ceiling.

Officers spent several hours searching for 40-year-old Constantino Coffie before he was apprehended again.

Also in January last year, a Florida man tried to evade arrest by hiding from police underwater in a pond—but was captured when he came up for air.
