Harris released several videos and statements Sunday morning to make her official endorsement of Biden, citing several times the grave importance of needing to defeat President Donald Trump in November. Harris, who dropped out of the presidential primary race in early December, is just the latest Democratic presidential rival to throw her support behind Biden over the past few weeks. She joins Minnesota Senator Amy Klobuchar, former South Bend, Indiana Mayor Pete Buttigieg, billionaire Michael Bloomberg and former Texas Congressman Beto O’Rourke in endorsing the so-called moderate candidacy of Biden.
Harris expressed sadness about all of the women dropping out of the race but reiterated that the Democratic Party must “rise to unite” to take down Trump. Biden will face off with Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders this Tuesday in several states, including Michigan, where Harris will join Biden in Detroit to campaign for him Monday night.
“I just want to let you guys know that I have decided that I am with great enthusiasm going to endorse Joe Biden for president of the United States,” Harris wrote in a statement released on her website and social media Sunday morning.
“Like many women, I watched with sadness as women exited the race one by one. Four years after our nominee, the first woman to win the nomination of a major party, received 3 million more votes than Donald Trump but still lost, we find ourselves without any woman on a path to be the Democratic nominee for president,” Harris continued. “This is something we must reckon with and it is something I will have more to say about in the future. But we must rise to unite the party and country behind a candidate who reflects the decency and dignity of the American people and who can ultimately defeat Donald Trump.”
She described Biden as “kind and endlessly caring,” saying he can accomplish Democratic goals stretching from classrooms to climate change.
“I believe in Joe Biden and will do everything in my power to help elect him the next president of the United States,” she wrote in a Sunday morning tweet. Harris reiterated in a video that “there is so much at stake in this election,” which many Democrats and Trump opponents frequently cite in terms of U.S. Supreme Court seats and the president’s seemingly reckless use of foreign assistance.
“@JoeBiden has served our country with dignity and we need him now more than ever. I will do everything in my power to help elect him the next President of the United States,” Harris said in a video, speaking from Alabama ahead of the “Bloody Sunday” 55th anniversary commemoration.
Following her endorsement, Biden tweeted: “Kamala — You’ve spent your whole career fighting for folks who’ve been written off and left behind — and no small part of that alongside Beau. From our family: thank you.”
