The SMG is a great way of dealing high damage in close-quarters engagements and MW2 isn’t lacking when it comes to the roster of submachine guns available. If players are finding Assault Rifles are getting a little tedious, and can be a great move to switch to an SMG to become more dominant in a different aspect of the battlefront. Here are the top picks for SMGs in Modern Warfare 2 and how to unlock them.

6 FSS Hurricane

The FSS Hurricane is an interesting SMG as at times it can feel like an AR due to its high damage output and decent damage at range. This factor is enhanced by its low recoil giving players the ability to engage in slightly further fights. This feature alone makes the Hurricane a very versatile weapon as it can be adapted using attachments to fit most engagements. To unlock this weapon players will need to level their M4 tree.

As one of the last weapons on the tree, players will find that this may be one of the later guns they unlock unless players directly go for this weapon. The benefit of having this weapon tied to the M4 tree is the attachments that become available as the weapon is leveled. The FSS has a very wide range of attachments available, giving players a lot of freedom when it comes to customizing how the weapon feels, especially when it comes to weapon tuning.

5 Minibak

The Minibak, similar to the FSS Hurricane, is the last weapon unlocked along its weapon tree. The base comes from the Kastov, meaning players can unlock this weapon from the usage of the AK47 in MW2.

With a unique magazine, the Minibak also has very low recoil, making it easy for players who may struggle with recoil control. After players level the weapon, some awesome attachments will increase the weapon’s ready time making it very easy to beat an enemy in a clutch gunfight. However, if players are looking for an SMG with slightly higher damage potential, there are a few alternatives.

4 MX9

Players may recognize this SMG as a variant of the AUG Assault Rifle. The MX9 is the highest damage per bullet SMG in the game. This is great for players who can land shots and have excellent recoil control. If players enjoy using the Assault Rifle variant of the MX9, they’ll feel right at home with this SMG as they do feel very similar in their spray patterns. Although the damage is lowered, this SMG can still do a decent amount of damage in medium-range combat. This is especially noticeable when attachments are applied such as an extended barrel and a scope to help improve the ranged capabilities.

This weapon does lack when it comes to mobility after attachments are applied (when compared to other weapons of the same class), so there are other options for players who prefer a more “run and gun” play style. The camo challenges will distract players from their weapon progression, so players may be surprised at how quickly they level their SMG.

3 VEL 46

Players will recognize the VEL 46 as the iconic MP7 from other Call of Duty titles. As one of the most iconic SMGs in the series, the VEL 46 packs a punch at close range with a high rate of fire and awesome damage output.

With such a small frame, the ready time on the SMG is very quick and will give players the ability to ready their weapon before others who may be using Assault Rifles or Snipers. Unfortunately, this SMG does lack in its damage range, so applying attachments to help with this can be a good idea if players plan on posting up in vantage positions to eliminate the enemy. Players will have to be careful with their attachments as they can lower the ready time to a point past being advantageous without realizing it, so air on the side of caution before making the VEL 46 a deadly weapon at range.

2 Fennec 45

The Fennec 45 is a unique weapon with its extremely high rate of fire providing some of the highest damage output available at close range. Players will find, in the right scenario, the Fennec (also known as the Vector) is an absolutely unstoppable force that is unmatched in the right hands. Unfortunately, the insane damage and rate of fire do come with a few pitfalls. Players will find it hard to take fights at anything past short range due to the strong recoil and damage drop-off. Players can try and counter this with attachments, but the advantage gained doesn’t seem worth the increase in ready time and ADS speed.

As long as players specify this weapon for close-range engagements and stay away from the long-lane areas of the map, the Fennec will destroy the enemy with a flurry of bullets. An extended mag can also come in handy, as users will burn through the standard magazine very quickly due to the high rate of fire. An ammo box can also be a good pick, especially if players plan on getting some longer killstreaks.

1 Lachmann Sub

The final weapon on this list is the Lachmann sub, also known as the MP5. The Lachmann brings a perfect balance of damage and mobility allowing a versatile play style for players who like to post up and defend a site but also attack when needed. This SMG is the last unlock along its weapon tree, so players may find it tricky to unlock the weapon without directly trying to unlock it. However, once players do, they will have access to a range of attachments to add to the weapon.

Players can take the Lachmann in a few directions using the attachments available. With an extended barrel and sight, players can increase the damage range allowing for combat at a distance. If players prefer higher mobility, short stock and laser will help players keep their shots on target and get them off before the enemy has time to react. The MP5 was extremely popular during Warzone, it’ll be interesting to see if it plays much of a role during Warzone 2.0.
