According to the ESRB, Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 will be packed with violence, as expected. The game will apparently feature decapitations as well as dismemberment, with body parts left on the ground. Dismemberment has been an inconsistent feature in Call of Duty titles, though it’s possible that decapitation and dismemberment will only be seen in the Zombies game mode.
The ESRB rating description goes on to describe “mutilated corpses,” cut-scenes of zombies killing people, and “a creature emerging from a man’s body, ripping his chest apart.” The latter sounds like something pulled straight out of Alien, and it’s unclear exactly what kind of creature will do this in Black Ops 4’s Zombies mode.
Violence, blood, and gore isn’t the only reason why Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 has been slapped with an M for Mature rating. The game will also depict drugs and have strong language. Overall, it sounds fairly typical for a Call of Duty game, especially one developed by Treyarch.
Treyarch’s Call of Duty games have been known to push the envelope with violence. After all, one of the main selling points of Call of Duty: World at War was its dismemberment feature, and the greatly increased level of violence associated with it. Considering this, it’s not that surprising that Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 will reportedly feature such graphic imagery.
Of course, most of that violence will likely be restricted to the Zombies game mode, so players with a weak stomach should be able to play the standard multiplayer mode without running into too much blood and gore. However, if the rumors of Zombies being in Blackout turn out to be true, it’s possible that the game’s battle royale mode will have plenty of graphic content as well.
Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 will launch on October 12 for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
