Called Die Hardpoint in the 80s Action Heroes event, the special mode was the only way gamers could get access to the nuke prior to this change. Instead of using the game’s controversial scorestreak system, gamers were able to obtain the nuke via a 30 killstreak. A nice reward for those that find themselves racking up lots of kills without dying, many were happy to see the nuke come to the game. However, with not everyone liking the Cranked timer, movement perks, and explosions, those that did not enjoy the mode were forced to miss out on the nuke.

Fortunately, one of the additions made in Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War’s Season 4 Reloaded update brings the killstreak to other game modes. To acquire it, gamers will still need to rack up a total of 30 kills just like they did inside of Die Hardpoint. It can be acquired in any regular 6v6 mode apart from League Play, the game’s competitive offering. It is also disabled for special modes, meaning that Gunfight, Multi-Team, and Party Games will not incorporate a Tactical Nuke.

Unlike past nukes, the nuke will not end a match. Instead, players will respawn and continue playing after the nuke goes off, making it more of a sign of accomplishment than anything else. Still, it is a welcome addition, and it should make Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War players more determined to go for a nuclear medal. Any gun kill counts toward the killstreak, though scorestreak kills will not help players get closer to the bomb. Once it is acquired, it can be activated like any other streak.

While it is nice to see gamers rewarded for getting so many kills without dying, seeing the nuke in Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War remains a strange sight. While there have been several variants of the nuke, ranging from the MOAB to the K.E.M. Strike, all have been in non-Treyarch games. Considering how long Treyarch went without adding a nuke to one of its Call of Duty titles, its arrival serves as a momentous occasion.

With the nuke finally coming to the Black Ops series, multiplayer fans have something extra to strive for in Season 4 Reloaded. While not everyone will be able to achieve a nuke, the fact that it is now possible to obtain in any game mode is a neat change.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
