With Treyarch taking the reins from Infinity Ward, it has been a bit of a tricky transition for the franchise as it tries to integrate Treyarch’s Black Ops Cold War into Infinity Ward’s Warzone game engine. Initially, fans of Warzone were not happy with the Black Ops Cold War guns introduced as part of the integration. After some time with the new weapons, fans have found some viable guns, including the popular MAC-10 submachine gun.

Having found its footing after a rocky start, Treyarch is settling into the role of showrunner for the Call of Duty franchise. Today, the developer announced the Double XP weekend will run until Monday, January 4 in both Black Ops Cold War and Warzone. While the formula behind the experience system has some folks perplexed, with fans wondering if XP rates were nerfed recently, the chance to get double experience generally pleases most players. This particular Double XP weekend focuses on character levels, which means faster leveling of Prestige Ranks, something that is more of a benefit to players of Black Ops Cold War.

Any Double XP event is appreciated by fans, as there have been some issues with the Double XP Tokens in Black Ops Cold War. Because the timed tokens count down even when not in a game mode, fans feel as though they are being shortchanged. Especially with the new Black Ops Cold War weapons, and a fresh new Battle Pass to level up, some players losing time in menu screens after activating a token are frustrated.

Next year looks to be another busy one for the COD franchise, as Treyarch will continue to roll out seasonal content for Black Ops Cold War and Warzone, with the big promise of a new full map for Warzone sometime soon. This is certainly one of the most talked about topics in the Call of Duty community, after Rebirth Island gave fans a taste of what a new map could feel like.

Starting off the new year with a Double XP event is a nice way to say thanks to the massive Call of Duty playerbase, and hopefully sets the tone for a fun 2021 for fans of Black Ops Cold War and Warzone.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is available now for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
