The Multiplayer reveal has been overall a successful event with fans generally pleased with the new information. As more details are released, fans get a clearer picture of what to expect from the next title, and although not in the official announcement, players who have seen the game early made one very notable observation.

There are no doors in Black Ops Cold War’s multiplayer, meaning that players will have to combat through open archways throughout their battle. No doors, although a small change to the standard, does have major implication when it comes to battlefield strategy. Previously, players could close doors and block entry points as a way of funneling enemies into a certain area. As effective as this strategy was, it still had several downfalls when confronted with full metal jacket ammunition, explosives, or any player who knew the map well enough to find another entry point. Without doors, players will be vulnerable on point-based locations, which will force fans to adopt new strategies in the evolving world of war.

Peeking through doors and using them for cover was a major sell point for Modern Warfare’s multiplayer mode. Although the fans tend to be split about simply rushing through doors or using them, they did provide both a realistic presentation alongside a unique tactical option.

There are some members of the Call of Duty community that will no doubt be upset to hear about the lack of doors. The removal of doors could be easily seen as a lack of realism on the game’s design, along with removal of options for players on the battlefield. While the doors are not a major part of the gameplay itself, they are still a huge design change from what many fans are used to.

Removal of doors comes with good and bad results, but until the game is released there is no way to tell how this will affect combat. Players will need to have a taste of gun balancing, map design, and overall play experience before being able to judge the impact that doors have on the multiplayer experience.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is set to release on November 13th for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
