Though some fans have already finished Modern Warfare 2’s campaign mode, with it releasing early for those who have pre-ordered, the rest of the player-base will be able to experience everything the ambitious sequel has to offer on October 28. While there are plenty of fan-favorite modes making a comeback, there are also a good few modes that are completely new to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, and some fans might want a heads-up before dolphin diving straight in.

Every Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Mode Confirmed For Launch

Every Modern Warfare 2 player will be able to experience the game’s explosive campaign soon enough. While some fans may have been spoiled due to its early release, there are plenty of twists, turns, and explosive set pieces to keep players shooting their way through Modern Warfare 2’s campaign mode. Coming in at about 6-8 hours, depending on difficulty, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2’s campaign mode offers some truly unique gameplay mechanics that fans won’t have seen in a Call of Duty before.

This entry’s extra mode is another Spec Ops offering. Infinity Ward’s fourth go at Spec Ops, this version seems a lot more ambitious than its predecessors, with large-scale missions that are designed to be tackled by two skilled players working together as a team. Spec Ops will launch with three missions, one of which sees players stealthily infiltrate a town, another that sees them disable a series of SAM turrets, and the last being a wave-based survival mode. Players will be able to choose a specific class kit and level it up through play, unlocking more equipment and weapons as they do so. Eventually, Modern Warfare 2’s Spec Ops mode should receive more content, with Raids coming in December.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is set to launch with 11 multiplayer game modes, featuring both a healthy amount of classics and some bold new modes. When it comes to Modern Warfare 2’s core map modes, which offer 6v6 gameplay, there’s Free-for-All, Team Deathmatch, Search and Destroy, Domination, Hardpoint, Headquarters, Control, Prisoner Rescue, and Knock Out. Most long-time Call of Duty fans should already know the majority of these modes, but there are a few here that are brand-new to Modern Warfare 2. Prisoner Rescue is a Rainbow Six-inspired mode that sees one team attempt to rescue two hostages while the other defends them, and each kill is an outright elimination. Knock Out is essentially the same, but the hostages are removed, being a straight-up elimination match - though there is a package at play that can decide the winner of the round if someone is holding it once time runs out.

There are also two large-scale, 32v32 multiplayer modes shipping with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. The first of these, Ground War, will also be pretty familiar to long-time Call of Duty fans. Ground War is essentially a large-scale Domination match, where two teams of 32 battle it out to secure the most objectives and kill the most enemy players. Ground War Invasion is brand-new to Modern Warfare 2 and basically turns Ground War up to 11. On top of the 64 real players, there’s also a bunch of AI running around the map and an array of land, sea, and air vehicles to use.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is currently available on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
