The majority of battles in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 will be at mid-range, perfect for assault rifles. But they are also adequately accurate at long distances and capable in tight quarters. When ranking assault rifles, players should remember that the best of the bunch tend to be the ones most lethal in every situation.

9 TAQ-56

The TAQ-56 needs to be last on this list due to being either the same or worse than the starting M4 in every category. Usually, when statistics like this occur within a class, the gun offers more rounds or an easier magazine to reload. But that’s not true for the TAQ-56, it’s just worse across the board.

Players who use this are at a disadvantage in about every situation. Unless players get some kills with the best field upgrades, they’re in for a tough match.

8 Kastov-74U

The Kastov-74U isn’t just tied for last, it’s dead last in two different categories: accuracy and recoil control. The rest of the statistics are in the top half, but these two attributes alone make the weapon inadvisable to use in any way except as an SMG. In this case, the player should just use an SMG instead.

7 Kastov 545

There is some confusion as to how the Kastov 545 should be used. The tops-in-class range is oddly combined with excellent mobility, not exactly necessary for players who utilize the long range. Unfortunately, everything else is way below average, so the cost for that range and mobility is simply too high.

6 Kastov 762

Having the highest damage in the game among assault rifles, the stopping power on the Kastov 762 is second to none. For players quick on the trigger, this is useful. However, be warned that unless players are extremely quick on the trigger, the rest of the attributes are average or below.

5 M16

Some players who use the assault rifle like to use their advantage by hanging back and waiting for enemies to press forward. Gamers who use this tactic won’t mind the worst-in-class mobility. The damage is also poor, but everything else is above average.

4 M13B

Fights are often won based on who can aim and start shooting the fastest. Despite the awful damage on the M13B, being first in both fire rate and handling is superior to outright stopping power in most cases of mid-range combat.

To get even more out of the fire rate, tune the weapon up and it becomes both a capable SMG and an assault rifle.

3 Lachmann-556

Bad handling, mobility, and damage are poison to standard assault rifles, but the Lachmann-556 is ranked first or second in everything else. Used as an automatic marksman or sniper rifle, this unique weapon inspires specific types of loadouts.

Get the graphics settings adjusted to see enemies clearly from the range that the Lachmann-556 is capable of.

2 STB 556

Players have strong feelings one way or the other about the STB 556. Tops in both accuracy and recoil control, players who excel at aiming won’t need to worry that their gun is letting them down. Second in damage, it’s also got the stopping power to take advantage of this.

The fire rate is the worst and the mobility and handling aren’t helpful either, to be sure. This is not a gun to be used when running around during a firefight. But when aiming and moving forward, it’s got some headshot potential that the other assault rifles lack. Combined with the best aim settings, players will only have themselves to blame for the rare instances that they miss.

1 M4

The M4 is the first weapon most players will use and it’s the top of its class. The thing about assault rifles is that players use them because they do everything pretty well. It’s a jack-of-all-trades weapon. Players who want further range should use marksman or sniper rifles. Players who want shorter range should use SMGs and shotguns.

In the top four or better in every category, the M4 is the best assault rifle at being an assault rifle. It’s also first in mobility, allowing players to run around, get in position, and maximize their time in combat. With the best build for the M4, this is a weapon that players can easily use from level one until it’s time to prestige.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is available now on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
